Tele Vue Starbeam with bar and bracket for SCT mounting.

Starbeam is a precision unit power finder designed to make pointing your astronomical telescope easy. Viewing through Starbeam, a transparent "red-star" appears projected against the sky background. The "star" is actually a small pinhole illuminated by a red L.E.D. Placed at the focus of a beam-splitting mirror/lens, the star is projected to infinity. Starbeam is effectively a reverse Herschelian telescope.

The size of the pinhole and focal length of the mirror result in a 10 arc-minute red-star, and 1/3 the diameter of the moon. Its size, color and adjustable brightness make it easy to see against any twilight to dark sky background. With a mirror aperture of 39mm, the projected image can be easily seen at any distance behind the mirror, whether 2 inches or 2 feet! Because the mirror surface is uncoated, and a multi-coated compensating curve is designed into the back of the mirror, the normal sky background appears through the almost invisible "mirror-lens".

This new Starbeam model has a dovetail bar and mounting bracket that fits the rear cell of any 8” or larger SCT. The bar and bracket are also sold separately so any Starbeam owner can adapt the uniquely accurate, large aperture 1x finder to SCT models.

Great, But Expensive

Of course this really costs a lot of money for a unit power finder, but it is beautiful and works perfectly.

TeleVue Starbeam w/SCT Base

By Paul Hashfield on October, 17th 2009

I recently acquired a Meade 8 LX 200R and sometime found great difficulty finding alignment stars with the Meade finder. This was particularly true when the selected stars were near the zenith as the straight through finder not only has a relatively narrow field of view but also required me to bend very low to get a view through it. I had previously owned a Televue TV 101 which included a Starbeam finder so I was familiar with using that finder. Mounting the Starbeam on my LX 200 solved all my problems and I now use it much more often than the Meade finder both for initial alignment and for quick pointing to observation targets. The flip mirrow is particularly useful for targets near zenith. A nice feature of the Starbeam, which I hadnt anticipated is its use for sidewalk star parties, It allows novice viewers to quickly look through the unit finder and get a visual indication of the location in the sky of the object viewed in the telescope eyepiece. Installation and allignment were very easy. Quality is superb. I have absolutely no negative comments.

I love the construction quality of this finder compared with the mostly plastic alternatives I have tried - the flip mirror is a must have feature.
