The perfect case for the AVX mount head (if you kept your shipping foam, which I did)

By Fred Lusk on May, 18th 2017

Since about 2001 I have stored and transported my Celestron C5+ OTA and mounts in a Pelican 1650 case. First it was the C5+'s single -arm table top mount, then an Orion SkyView Pro mount head, then finally the AVX mount head (in the shipping foam). The Pelican case is hell-for-stout and has served very well, but it actually weighs—all by itself—a tad more than the AVX head plus the 5" OTA (24 lbs vs. 23 lbs). Also, sometimes we stuff all three of our scopes (C5+, CPC-800, and 10" Orion Dob) plus appurtenances into the back of my Grand Cherokee and this one large case (30.75" x 20.5" x 11.6") mades packing a challenge.

Because of the weight and size of the Pelican case, three years ago I started looking for a more efficient way to store and transport the AVX. My searches were unsuccessful until last week. That's when I stumbled upon the Sirius Tech website and their new (I’m guessing) SCB-2224-200. I saw that Anacortes TWB was a vendor, so I immediately placed an order. The case just arrived and I couldn't be happier with it. It only took me a minute or so to get the foam into the case and the fit is perfect and snug. The case is extremely well made using high-quality materials. The zippers operate smoothly. I don’t know how much the SCB-2224-200 weighs, but I’m guessing it’s about 22 lbs less than the Pelican 1650. One other nice feature is the inclusion of a small piece of foam to close one of the side holes in the AVX’s shipping foam.

Sirius Tech has a winner in this case. How good is it? I think Celestron should ship each AVX in one, with an appropriate bump in the price, of course.

Oh, and don’t worry about the C5+ OTA. I’ve put it in the no-name padded case my dad used for his full-size Beta camcorder back in the day. The fit is almost perfect and some remnants from the Pelican’s pluck foam remedied the “almost.” part.
